Our Mission

When China established the one-child policy to control the growth of its population, it inadvertently created a new problem: a flood of abandoned infants. Chinese authorities made heroic efforts to deal with this new dilemma, and greatly expanded facilities to care for these unfortunate children.

But such care cannot last forever. At some point, orphans who are not adopted must leave the institutional environment.

What happens to them? Are they prepared for independent living?

Regardless of the hand fate has dealt them, these children deserve a chance. Golden Moon Foundation exists to help them get it. Our mission is to provide older children who reside in China’s orphanages with the knowledge, skills and emotional support necessary to achieve their potential, lead full, happy, meaningful lives, and integrate successfully into their communities.

Our Approach

Our work is founded upon programs that have been successfully implemented in the United States for children transitioning out of the foster care system.

Our Program

Whether children are moving out of foster care in America or out of orphanages in China, they share the same vulnerability to high-risk behavior and the same heavy odds against reaching their potential.

The key to our program is the identification of a mentor for each child. A substantial amount of research indicates that mentoring programs can be extraordinarily effective tools for the development of a positive sense of self. Children need to have – and deserve to have – a caring adult in their lives. Our mentoring program provides it.

We develop individual plans for each child. We work with local industries, businesses and social organizations to match the right mentor to the right child. We train and support the mentors. We form a network of support. No mentor and no child feels that he or she is in this alone.

Origins

Golden Moon Foundation was conceived by parents whose children were adopted from China. We continue to grow with the increased involvement of people from North America and China, who come from all walks of life, who are united in their compassion for the children we seek to help.
